When I edit cells in a filtered range other cells also change. Why?

    Hi Forum,

Usually if I filter, edit the values in all cells of a column, and then clear the filter, only the cells that appeared in my filter have changed.

I have one spreadsheet that changes other values that are not in the filtered range. That is, I filter to display, say, 10 rows. I change the values in all the cells in one column to, say, TEST. When I clear the filter there are many more than 10 cells that now contain TEST. Sometimes it is all cells that now contain TEST, sometimes not all, but a lot more than the 10 that I intended to change.

Does anyone know why this would happen and how to avoid it?

    Thanks very much

    Dave
