Question Excel 2010 crashes when macros are enabled

    Hi,

We purchased a copy of MS Excel 2010 and installed and activated it successfully. We have been trying to open an excel (2010 version .xlsm) file which has a lot of macros and embedded vidoes. The file opens correctly but Excel crashes when we click on the 'Enable Content' button to enable the macros in the file. We get an error "Excel encountered a Problem and needs to close".

We are using a system with Windows XP (SP3) as the OS. It satisfies all the hardware requirements for MS Excel 2010. We had re-formatted the system and re-installed the OS on this machine before installing Excel and we do not have any other programs installed, except symantec antivirus. We had also checked for windows updates on this machine after installation (MS Office was updated with 3 patches that were available)

This file was sent to us by our client and it works perfectly on his machine. He has even tried it on a couple of other machines and not faced any problem, we can be sure that there is nothing wrong with the file. Is there any reason why we would be encountering this Issue? Are we missing some libraries or add-ons required to run excel with macro content? Do we have to tweak the default settings in order to overcome this Issue?

This question has already been posted in MrExcel forum. We have not yet received any replies. The link is given below

We would be very grateful to anyone who can help us with this. It is really important for us and we are absolutely clueless on how to proceed.

    Regards,
    Meera

    Hi Meera,
Is your client also running the same version of Windows & Excel?
    Cheers,
    Adam.

I don't think a different version of Windows would cause this. Excel 2010 should open workbooks created in earlier versions of Excel.

Can you open other workbooks with macros or is it only the one file that crashes. It could be that some activeX controls in this particular workbook are missing.

    Thank you Adam and RoyUK

Our client is using the same OS and the same version of excel. In fact he purchased 2 copies of Excel 2010 (one for us and one for himself). He has tested the file before he sent it to us. So version issues may not be the reason.

We had tried change to the Trust Centre settings to enable macros by default. This caused the file to throw a VBA error as soon as we opened it. The error is "Application Defined or Object Defined error: 57121". We had also tried to make the location of the file a trusted folder, but it did not help.

We have tried to open another .xlsm file (version 2007) with the same results. Excel files without macros in them seem to be working fine. We do not have add-ins enabled. Please could you let us know how to make sure whether all libraries required for the file are present or we are missing something crucial?

    Thanks and Regards,
    Meera

    Hi,

Registry is a database where data contained on the computer such as software installed in the computer, their settings etc. The registry needs to be checked for any errors. Any errors that happen in the registry will affect the Microsoft Excel. Make sure that you clean the registry once in a while. The cleaning of registry could be done by any registry cleaning software.

    Have you used ActiveX controls?

If Libraries are missing the file should open, but setting security to always allow macros is a very bad idea. The Trusted Folders are OK but you need to debug the code to see what is causing the error.

Without seeing the code and/or the workbook we can only guess at the cause.

Are you freaking kidding me? Clean the registry....Holy crap that must be a joke.

How about look into your event viewer...see what errors are in there...and then do some research. In my case it was VBE7.dll causing it to crash....I found this article that helped.... http://www.ingmarverheij.com/2011/02...-saveas-macro/
