Exclamation Excel file size increases when saving - 80KB file becomes 26MB, help!

When I save an excel file of normal size received from another user (via email or off my company's share drive), modify it using excel and resave it, the file size increases significantly. This is quite a hassel since I can then no longer send it back via email with ease.

For example: a 80KB file sent to me via email turns into a 26MB file when I modify it and save it to my desktop

This does not happen when I just save the sent file to my desktop. This only happens after I make a change, no matter how insignificant the change may be. This happens with ALL documents, not on occassion but ALWAYS.

    Please help!

    I use Excel 2010.

Hi TanyaExcel and welcome to the forum,

This sounds like you are adding something extra to the data, somehow or somewhere.
If you open a blank file and save it, how big is it? If you open a file with a single cell and formula, how big is it?
Do you have any VBA in your default template that might add stuff?
Do you have lots of hidden objects in your file that you put there?

I'd be working on these questions.

Also - you have 2010 Excel, which is supposed to make things smaller. Do you get an Excel file or a text file or something else?
One test is worth a thousand opinions.

    I'm looking into these items...

    1) Starting from blank files is fine and when I copy and paste over my workbooks into new files it is fine as well, however after working in it for a while, it increases in size.
    2) No VBAs that I am aware of. My Macros security shows that they are disabled.
    3) I don't know what hidden objects there could be that I am adding. I am looking into how to check this.

This was helpful. Problem not resolved yet but gave me things to investigate to help solve problem.
    Thanks!

    Hi,

I've had shapes that were hidden on a worksheet. After doing a lot of copy and paste, I unintentionally copied these shapes thousands of times, and never saw them.
Using Excel 2010 Click on the Find & Select Icon on the Home Tab. Then click on the "Go To Special.." submenu. Then click the "Objects" radio button and OK. This will select all the Objects you have. Then click delete and see if that reduces the size of your file.

Can you attach an example file where this happens to you and describe all the steps exactly as you perform them until you close the file?

Also, can you specify if you are saving the file in a particular format? Some formats use a lot more space than others.

Thanks for the tip! I tried it and I only have two shapes I meant to put there, darn! Thanks for trying!
