I can't open the file at all to even rename it.

You must first save the file from mail and then rename it to .xls (and have a try).
Do you know why this happens?
Yes, but at the moment I can't remember, sorry.
It should be something like this: the .dat attachment is the result of a coding problem misconstrued by the receiver's mail handler that does not recognize the coding system used by the mail handler who forwards.
