Clicking on Excel file in a folder does not start Excel

Clicking on Excel file (.xls) in a folder does not start Excel. I get a message "There was a problem sending the command to the program."

i am using Excel 2007 and Windows 7.

However clicking on a Word doc does start Word.

I have Set the associations for .xls to Excel but the problem persists.

What can I do?

Check the extensions of Excel 2007 and later e.g., xlsx..
Did you tried installing office file format converter (from 2003 and earlier version to 2007 and advanced versions) ?

I tried to click on .xlsx files but get the same error message.

I should have mentioned that this problem started a few months ago. Before then there was no problem starting Excel by clicking on an Excel file.

I would suggest you to reinstall the Excel 2007 and MS office file format converter...
For excel, you can go to Control Panel -> add remove programs -> and try repair option as well .. thanks.

Tried the repair option but still not working correctly.

Reinstalling requires all of Office and that scares me.

My understanding is that the converter is to make newer files able to be opened in older version. Is that correct?

yes.. your understanding is correct regarding converter.

did you checked if this issue is happening on any other system ?
