Convert date to month/year text

I have dates that are entered in the 12/1/2012 format. I converted them to show up as Dec-12. I then created a pivot table based on this data and they are being sorted based on individual dates, not months as I had intended. Whenever I click on a cell that says Dec-12, it shows the actual number in the cell as 12/1/2012. How do I fix this to sort by months? Or to have the text actually show up the cell so it will sort correctly?

Right click your field with dates and click " Group" - Then select months - You can now sort / work with months - Grouping will not work if you have blank cells though

This then gets rid of the year, which I need as well.
