Is there any alternative way of closing single file instead terminating whole xls program?

    Hi Fellows,

If I have opened 3-4 excel workbooks at a time and one file gets stuck after saving the file. Is it possible to shutdown that single file which makes the whole excel application "not responding".

I have to end the excel process to get out of the not responding excel program, in this case I also lose the current data for other opened sheets which are not causing any problem.

    Thanks!

    Hi Friend,

No other ways to solve this. The only precaution we can take is Save the file frequently (or use auto save option). So that during closing the application we lost minimum data.

    Hi

Any ideas as to why the file becomes stuck is it because of something wrong with the file or just an infrequent glitch.

    Hey Motivationalist;

The answer is a simultaneous Yes and No.

Yes, in that you can open up multiple instances of excel to provide a little more protection against a single instance crashing. So rather than just selecting the file and opening it, open excel from your start menu or quick icon link, and it will create a separate instance. The two separate instances can be move independently, having one on each monitor, tiled side by side, two separate ribbons, etc. If one crashes, I don't believe it will impact the other.

However, if one crashes, it's still going to crash every spreadsheet that's on that instance. So, not really protected that way.

This is also going by memory, and unfortunately, I'm not able to verify my statements at the moment. But it should function that way. Alternatively, under the File/windows button, and then Excel Options, the 4th tab is the save options, and you can increase the frequency of backups of your files to protect further against potential crashes/data loss.

    Hi Miraun,

    Thanks for you input...

Well opening two instances of excel at same time will work I guess, I didn't think that way earlier.

What if we open the 2nd instance of excel in safe mode (excel /save) and open the file which somehow crashes regularly. I hope it will not take too much CPU resources.

    Lets See!!!

    Thanks,

    Hi Chris,

It's a shared workbook that stuck sometimes after saving the file.... may be some sharing bug causing it, don't know exactly.

    Thanks!
