Opening a worksheet from a shortcut on desktop

I have had a problem with opening Excel worksheets from shortcuts on my desktop, right after installing Windows updates. The only way I have been able to open them is to do a system restore and then after installing the next lot of updates the problem comes back again.
I have tried everything to fix it to no avail. The other day it happened again and I asked the IT guy at work about it and he suggested going to Control Panel - Programs and Features - Change - Repair so I tried that and it worked. The solution was right under my nose and I did not know how to find it.
My question is - Why the hell would Microsoft install updates on my computer that prevent a perfectly good tool like Office from working properly ?
Anyone know what is going on here regarding these ridiculous updates?

    Hi Mickmac,

I presume Microsoft do not consider it as a good practice to have Excel WorkSheet Shortcuts on you Desktop.

As it is, cluttering your Desktop with all sorts of Shotcuts, is not favourably looked upon, as it slows down the performance of your Machine considerably. Maybe it could be a deliberate "Clean-up" Microsoft include with their Updates.

    Thanks for the reply Winon.
Cannot believe even Microsoft would do that, and anyway I could not open them from within a folder or from within Excel itself. Nothing to do with it not opening a desktop shortcut I am afraid.

    Hi Mickmac,

With dowloading an update, the System normally reboots, to fully implement such updates. However, I have found that sometimes it does not work, and have to shut down the system completely and Start up again.
