How to determine the number of hours and minutes between a start time and an end time

Hopefully everyone can see the two sample attachments which are the same thing just different extensions (PDF, and JPEG).

Basically I'm trying to make a very simple weekly time sheet where I enter the time in and time out, and it calculates the number of hours. Simple concept. The problem is how Excel forces two formats, neither of which I want. It either does h:mm AM/PM or 24 hour time. I simply want it displayed like in the attachments AND I would like it entered that way.

I played around with different cell formats but nothing seems to work like it want. Because the first row is "assumed" to be AM and the second row is "assumed" to be PM, I want the speed and efficiency of just typing in hh:mm on a 12 hour system.

    Please help....simple but frustrating.

In B7, use this formula: =B6+0.5-B5

The first images show what I want it to look like.

However it doesn't behave like that. If I type in 9:00 into the cell, it either switches to 9:00 AM or goes to military time (which is readily apparent from 0-12:00). I want to type in 9:00 or 5:30 and have it stay that way.

Also the formula doesn't work (see second image).

If a person came in at 9 and left at 10, is that 1 hour or 13 hours?

99.99% of the time it would be 13 hours, but I see your point. If they came in just for the morning I'd have a problem. For now let's assume they come in the morning and leave in the afternoon.

assume they come in the morning and leave in the afternoon
In that case, areichgott's formula works fine.

Well not really. It's not just the result that's the issue it's the input fields as well. Try it. When you type in values it wants to either go to hh:mm AM/PM or 24 hour time. I want it to show without the AM or PM and in 12 hour time. Especially when you input or change the values. When I tried to change 5:30 PM the formula bar read "17:30:00". I want it to show "5:30".

You're just typing in the data as "5:30", right? If that's the case, select all the input cells, go to custom format, and type "h:mm"

Now it looks like this. See the time out row? It's in 24 hour time.

I don't want that. I want it to read 5:30.

Strange. So you type in "5:30" and it returns that? You're not typing in "5:30 pm"?

I deleted the time out cell and inputed 5:30 and now the formulas crapped out.

This actually looks like progress. Try inputting =B6+0.5-B5 in cell B7 now.

Re: How to determine the number of hours and minutes between a start time and an end time

Maybe I have it now. I also forgot to mention I have a 1/2 hour for lunch.

    Cool.

Now how do I format and enter the formulas into the blank cells so each week the table is empty, but when I type in values it calculates everything out. That way I'll be able to see which days are completed and which aren't.

Re: How to determine the number of hours and minutes between a start time and an end time

If you highlight the input cells and just press delete, it should preserve the formatting. Check the attached file, it should only show the total hours when you have a clock out time, and it will account for your 1/2 hour lunch. Does this work for you?

Is this what you're looking for? I'm not sure what you need in Daily Time vs Daily Hours.

Sorry - the solution came in while I was uploading.
