Using Spreadsheet to link to a website

    Hello,

I'm working on a pretty large bioinformatics project that includes every gene in the mouse genome (~37,000) in one spreadsheet. I now need to include data on my spreadsheet regarding info contained in the online COSMIC gene database. On COSMIC's website, you can type in the name of a gene in the search bar, and it will return a page for that gene that summarizes the number of samples analyzed and unique mutations found in those samples for that particular gene. I want to embed links in my spreadsheet so that if the user clicks on a gene name in the COSMIC column of my spreadsheet, the user will be taken to the online COSMIC web page for that gene.

Is there a way I can do this without going through each of the 37K genes individually to create a link for each one? Here is an example of the web page the user will be directed to.
    http://cancer.sanger.ac.uk/cosmic/ge...rview?ln=MAGI1

    Thank-you for your help!

    Hmmm

Thought the OP was asking for a link for each genes page not just the website

Yes! This is what I'm looking for, but now I just need to create links like this for every gene in my spreadsheet, without going through and doing each one individually.

    Erik,

What are the URLs like? Are they all variations of "http://cancer.sanger.ac.uk/cosmic/gene/overview?ln=" + the name of the gene the URL refers to? If you have matching names in your excel file, you could concatenate the web address above, plus the name of the gene, eg MAGI1...
    Brendan.

Yes the URLs are all variations of that same address, with the unique gene name inserted at the end. Can you tell me how to concatenate the web address plus the name of the gene?

In an empty cell, type the web address "http://cancer.sanger.ac.uk/cosmic/gene/overview?ln=", and the cell address that contains the gene name, ie A2, separated only with a "&"; and all wrapped within a HYPERLINK funtion, ie:
