Assigning a medical record number to a patient name

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the forum, so bear with me. I am creating a spreadsheet with the following format:
    Date-Name-Medical Record Number-Procedure.
I would like to have the MRN (which is unique and consistent to each patient) autofill in a different cell (but same column) when the patient's name is entered.
I have started generating this data & many names autofill already, but I have to manually enter the respective MRN. Could this automatically be generated ?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Almost certainly but we'll need to understand the relationship between the name and MRN, or putting it another way how you generate the MRN.

Upload a sample workbook, anonymised as necessary, and add some manual results, explaining with notes if it's not blindingly obvious how you arrive at them.

Considering that the MRNs are unique and patient names are not, wouldn't it be better to do it the other way around?

    Thanks all. Here's a sample.

    1) This is a stand-alone spreadsheet. Data cannot be imported from a central repository or other system.
    2) The MRN is generated elsewhere. I will always have to enter it at least once manually. It cannot be imported.
    3) The names have to entered at least once manually, they will autocomplete thereafter.
    4) The column order is not really important
    5) My goal would be to have "Joan Rivers" medical record number self populate in the correct cell when the name is entered
    6) SHG's suggestion would also work: MRN first, name self populates

Let me know what else I can do to help explain and thanks for the help.

Please upload a workbook (as requested).

Please don't upload pictures. None of us are inclined to recreate your data when you have a workbook available - see guidelines in the Rules area of this forum.

    Hi,

So one way using shg's suggestion is to hold a series of formulae in column A and overtype when a completely new MRN is added.

for example in A22 copied down as far as necessary

    Formula: copy to clipboard
