Format control question about combo box values in the linked cell

Hi

I have a combo box that offers the user a list of 8 options.

In the link cell a corresponding value is displayed.

There are values 1 to 7 in the adjacent cells that I thought Excel was using to show the selected option in the cell link. As far as I can see Excel generates its own value to show in the output cell linked to the input range.

Is it possible to edit these values?

I have highlighted a range of cells that includes the user options and adjacent rows of values but, Excel is only using the first column of cells in the range.

Any guidance would be gratefully received.
