How to filter a column of text entries for the occurence of a particular word

How can I filter a column of text and number entries so that excel gives me only the cells that contain a particular numbe or word?
I have tried putting a number 1 for example in the next column only in the cells that contain the word or number that I want then filtering this column for the number 1 but this is not very good.

    Try this...
    • Select the range of cells that contains the data you want filtered (include the heading, too)
    • Data.Filter
    • Click the dropdown arrow
    ...Select: Text Filters
...Select the appropriate option (Equals, Contains, etc)
...Enter the value you want found
    ...Click: OK

Is that something you can work with?
