Need some advice - is excel the answer?

Hi All

I am challenged with creating a tool that can be used to track job costs and information from quote stage to completion.

I started by trying to do it with in excel (see attached) but as this is likely to be used by multiple users is this the answer?

Can you knowledgeable people enlighten me as to the best course of action?

Many Thanks

Nelly

If you don't want people editing the file, you only want them to be able to view the contents, then you can set a password for editing (not opening the file, it's two different things). However, if multiple people are going to be editing this file, then you'll eventually run into the file being locked. Someone may leave the file open on their PC, and not come back for hours on end.

One of the problems I had with a similar project was that people would save a copy on their local machine from the network drive and only update that file, which in the end, caused major issues when trying to merge four files from four different people. To solve this, I created a simple Access Database with a user input form. Sent everyone the links to the network DB and we've had no issues since then.

You may want to look into the route of using an Access Database for this project. You can create forms for users to read and enter information.

Good Luck

I think you meant read-only, not editing?
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Yes, you're right.

You can protect the sheet through Permissions::Protect Current Sheet
