Did you checked other ms office applications like ms word, ms powerpoint etc ?

Whether it is happening with excel alone?
Because it seems to be a slow processing speed because of lack of running programs. If it is happening with every application of Windows then try to kill the unwanted process of the applications by the helps of Task Manager.
