Excel won't paste, won't reformat, doesn't update screen

I developed this problem on 2/15/13. At first only on one workbook, but now it seems to happen with every excel file on our server. I try to copy and paste between workbooks, the paste action creates an error window saying Microsoft Excel cannot paste the data. If I do a paste special as text, or a link and then a CTRL C, CTRL V in the new workbook, I can get the data. But then I try to reformat the new column, I get an error message saying "Too many different cell formats". If I try to insert a new column, I have to scroll down past the end of all of my data and then scroll back up before the change takes effect.

This seems like a virus, but only Excel seems to be affected and two different virus scanners find no problems with any computer on the network. Happens on multiple computers and multiple files in multiple locations.

I've heard of some problems with the clipboard in excel following updates released earlier this month but I don't know if it's an acknowledged issue. I suggest you check what updates (windows or office) were applied to your machine recently

if at first you don't succeed try doing it the way your wife told you to
