    Cool Searchability of excel

    Howdy
I have be given the task of creating a searchable index for a plant maintenance dept. This index includes 200 volumes of maintenance manuals, linking part numbers and prints. Now my digital copy of this material is in a separate database in Access and in another database as well. What they want is just an index search with cross references.
    Like;
Enter a number_____ and the location will appear "Vol2, section 1500.2.3c" and a drawing number will appear "Drawing M6.04-23" and a generic name will appear "control valve".
While Im trying to figure this out, I will be editing the manuals as well because there is missing information, updates and missed located. So this busy guy has some time to play with some ideas. I’m running MS2010 excel (prefer) and access. I have ran excel for years but don’t get to play with what it can really do.

    Appreciate the help!

    Re: Searchability of excel

I'm not really sure what your questions is.
I would read up on the forum rules, and provide us with a bit more info, and almost certainly a sample workbook, with what you have, and an example of what you would like the final version to be capable of.

Want to get your question answered quickly?
Ensure your question is not too vague. Don't assume anyone is familiar with your problem. While you can upload small attachments, describe your problem in the body of the post. We are fortunate to have several Excel gurus, but few mind-readers.
On the other hand, skip irrelevant details. Be descriptive and concise. Short, direct, and to-the-point questions with apt thread titles are almost always answered promptly.
Keep the scope reasonably narrow. Questions like, "How do I set up an accounting system in Excel?" might be a long time waiting.
Explain what you've already tried. ("Calculation is set to automatic, but formulas still don't compute") so helpers don't waste your time or theirs.
Post a WORKBOOK. Nobody wants to type data from a picture or paste text from your post into a spreadsheet as a prelude to helping. To attach a file, push the button with the paperclip (or scroll down to the Manage Attachments button), browse to the required file, and then push the Upload button.
If your question has not been answered within a day, consider adding another post with any additional information you believe is relevant. If you think your post is good as is, just reply to your own thread with the words "Bump no response", which will bring it to the top of the forum.
Please click the * icon below if I have helped.

    mmm-
    Lets try this.
Is it wiser to create a searchable index in excel or access?
    Example:
A library index, which is fundamentally a sound platform.

    Re: Searchability of excel

If I am using Excel 2010, is a table function better to use in this creation?

Tag # Part number Name Volume # Section # Drawing #

And then if I enter a search in one cell of a column then the other columns information is also shown.
If I am still vague, please excuse me, I will try to clear that up.

If you would like to run a parameter query from Excel against your Access database, then look at this link.
