Conditional formatting: if date is before today highlight only IF adjacent cell is blank

Hiya,

I'm using Excel 2003

What I have is two columns which contain dates:

Date to be returned (D), and date returned (E).

What I would like is if column D is before today's date, I want that to change colour, only IF the cell next to it in column E is blank. I also need this to be the case for future entries as it is continuously being added to.

I can not attach the example for some reason so I hope this is enough.

It highlighted a cell that was before today but the cell next to it isn't blank

It ignored however the cell I hoped would be highlighted, the one cell which has a blank cell next to it but the date is before today.
