Excel 2011 (14.3.1 update) Excel crashes attempting to open xlsm files

I first noticed the problem when I updated to Office 14.3.1 last week, but the following issue has gotten progressively worse in my attempts to fix this.

After updating to Office 14.3.1, I attempted to open a couple of workbooks containing macros created in the last couple of months. On attempting to open these, Excel quit unexpectedly. At that time, it could open some older Excel xlsm files and older xls files that do not have macros. When I reverted to 14.2.5 from a backup, the problem went away. Reinstallation of 14.3.1 caused the problem to appear again.

The files that were misbehaving were files that contained a macro that opened up the template from which the file was generated, modified the template, and closed the template. These macros have run perfectly in the past. I was able to generate new files from the template, which could be saved normally (and I think I could reopen them, which has since changed as you read further).

I sent one of these files to another user on my computer, and the file behaves the same when the other user attempted to open the file.

I was able to open the misbehaving files in Excel 2010 on my office computer and save these. I could transfer these files from my PC to a flash drive and could open these files from the flash drive, but when I saved these files to my Mac, they caused Excel to crash again.

I reinstalled Office, which included the 14.3.1 update. This did not change the behavior. (I did no uninstall Office 2011 before reinstalling. Was that OK?) I also repaired permissions and even attempted to restore my User profile, but I think I may have created more problems in doing so.

Somewhere in the process, attempting to open the template (xltm file) caused Excel to crash. I was able to fix this by restoring the file from a backup, but it appears to be unstable, and I cannot generate new files from this template.

All I have is Carbon Copy Cloner backup of my hard drive from January, which did not have the Microsoft Office application folder backed up, so I don't have a way to revert back to it. I have restored my user Library from the Carbon Copy Cloner backup, but Excel crashes on my attempt to create a new file from this template.

    Please help!

Re: Excel 2011 (14.3.1 update) Excel crashes attempting to open xlsm files

    Update:

I finally fixed my problem by completely removing Microsoft Office 2011 from the computer and reinstalling it and allowing the Microsoft Auto Update program to update to 14.2.3. Everything was working at that point. All my files would open, the template (which I had saved to my desktop and restored to the My Templates folder was working perfectly, and the files that were built on that file were working perfectly.

I backed up the hard drive and then I allowed Microsoft Auto Update to update to 14.3.1. Now Excel crashes on attempting to create a file from this template.

My next move is to attempt to recover the functionality I had before the update. I may have to uninstall again and reinstall Office!!!

    Another Update:
Because I had performed a backup after getting everything to work again, I used this backup to get Office back to its condition before the 14.3.1 update. This required restoring lots of files and folders that are peculiar to Office. After restoring all of these files and folders (hundreds), Excel is behaving as before the update to 14.3.1. I believe I have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that Update 14.3.1 is the source of the problem.

How do I get this information to Microsoft or to someone (perhaps Mac Life?) that has some clout with Microsoft? Am I the only person that has had this problem with Update 14.3.1?
