How to open a different Excel file on each of two monitors?

    Hi Forum,

Like many people, I run two monitors and am able to open different files on each monitor which is very handy.

This doesn't seem to work with Excel. If I have two different Excel files open I can only view one at a time. I can move across to the other monitor, but then can only view one at a time on that monitor - very frustrating.

When I was using Excel 2010 on my last job I was shown a clunky, round-about way of being able to open two Excel files, one on each monitor. (By opening one file, opening a new Excel document from there, and then opening the other Excel file from the new document, minimizing that file and dragging it to the other screen).

Now I am using Excel 2007 and am not able to view two different Excel files, one on each screen.

Can anybody tell me how I can do this in Excel 2007?

    Thanks very much

    Dave

I have found that in Excel 2007 when I want to do this very thing, I do the way you already know. Open one file, then open a new Excel document from the start menu, open the file I need in that window, then move one file to the other monitor. I agree that it is clunky, but it does solve the problem.

Thats the only way I know how to do it as well...and it works "fine" on 2007
    1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

I don't have any experience with dual monitor but I read a similar thread like this in that the solution provided is Holding the CTRL (or may be Shift not exactly) button while opening the file will move it to next monitor.

It seems this problem is also dependent of the operating system.

But according to this link you can just change setting in Excel.

    Thanks all,

Alf, the "missing key" for me was having the Excel icon on my desktop; this made all the difference!

    Thanks very much
