After upgrading to Excel 2010, can't save XLM file ?

I set up a new laptop for a client that uses spreadsheets to create custom bids for his business. His main sheet is a .xlm file that several .xls worksheets point to. Every time he tries to save the .xlm file it says he can't save it unless he converts it to another format. Any ideas? I'm about to revert back to his earlier version of Excel...

What is an .xlm file? I know about .xml and xlsm files, but this one I don't know.

Sorry -- It's ab XLW file with master pricing for hundreds of bid sheets - xls files. Pricing on the slw changes all the sheets. If the xlw is saved in the new format, it won't connect to all the bid sheets. Solution?
