Help with copying and pasting conditional formatting

I need help trying to figure out how to copy and paste conditional formatting with our changing the cell values. My first row of data starts in row 4 and here is what I have in D4

If D4 is less than or equal to AA4, AW4, BS4, CO4 then it will highlight D4

Now I want to copy that format and paste it for all rows in column D. The problem I'm having though is when I paste the formula it doesn't change to match the row I'm on. For example, when I paste it in D5 this is what I get

If D5 is less than or equal to AA4, AW4, BS4, CO4 then it will highlight D5

How do I paste it so that it will update to show AA5, AW5, BS5, and CO5. I want to be able to do this for 500 rows.

when you go into CF, look at the range it is being applied to, and change it there
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

I can do that, but I don't want to have to do that for each of the 500 rows. Is there a way I can copy and paste the formatting so that it will update and be relevant to the row it's pasted to?

That will apply your CF to the entire range selected.

An alternative is to copy/paste formats

what version are you using?

Well one way would be to select all the cells that contain the data. Paste them off in a blank area.
Go back to the cells you want formatted. Set the conditional formatting in a cell and then expand the cell to the range you want.
i.e.: set Conditional Formatting on Cell B2 and expand it down to B10. You'd do the same if you wanted to continue numbers in a sequence.
Or expand them in a row. However you need.

Then go back to your data → copy it → go to your formatted cells → paste special → Values

Or you can copy → paste special → formats

I'm using Excel 2000. On the CF screen there isn't a field for the range it's being applied to. What keeps happening when I paste the format down the rest of the column it doesn't adjust the number for the row it's comparing to. It just keeps comparing to the original row that I formatted.

Re: Help with copying and pasting conditional formatting

When you select a cell or range in conditional formatting window it automatically places the $ before the column and row. Take out the $ for the column letter or row number depending on which way you are going to be expanding it.
