Conditional formatting based on value of another cell

    Hi,

I've been scratching my head for hours trying to work out what is going wrong.

I want to format a cell conditional on the value of another cell. I have read numerous threads on the topic and no matter what I do, it doesn't seem to work for me. I've made it a simple as possible by creating a new workbook and entering:
    A1: 5
    B1: 2
C1: Some random text - this cell has the conditional formula: ="A1>B1"

However, the cell doesn't get formatted.
Here is a screenshot and here is the simple workbook.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

You need to remove the speach marks "" as in Fotis's example.

    Hi

Thanks for your input. Excel inputted the quotation marks itself when I did not include the equals sign at the start of the formula myself.

I'm now able to format properly. I will try to incorporate this into my main workbook tomorrow - hope it works out. Thanks for your help.

Re: Conditional formatting based on value of another cell

Hello, I was hoping for some help on a similar problem.

I would like to populate A1 with simply the number 1.

Then I would like to write a formula that states:
IF A1=1, then highlight cells B1:B20 a certain color. That formula can be written anywhere EXCEPT the cells I intend to highlight (for they are already populated with data).

Is that possible? Thank you very much for your time.
