Conditional formatting - Quarters Icon Sets set via list values

I have a status column (A) which list values are set in column (AA). The values are Not Started, Started, Elements Defined, Validation Completed, Completed. As the user chooses the correct status from the drop down list in col A, I want the conditional formatting rule to change that into a Quarters Icon set icon sunch as a full circle for Completed, half circle for Elements Defined etc... Only way I can think of this working is using a formula, but not sure how to. Thanks in advance for your help.

Dirty Confession: Conditional formatting always confuses me.

Now that we have that out of the way, you can change the criteria and for the Quarters. To do this, add the formatting to the range then go to 'Manage Rules...'. Select the formatting you just added and 'Edit Rule'. Here you can change the quarters to equal the values available in column A. Just set column AA equal to column A (and select 'show quarters only' if you desire) and I think you are good to go.

This doesnt answer your question as such, but may help with future CF situations.

What I sometimes do, if I an working with a tricky CF formula, is I create it IN the worksheet itself to begin with. That way, you can play around with it easier to get it to do what you want. All you have to do is construct the formula in such a way that if gives a TRUE or FALSE answer - those are the only answers CF works with. So for instance, if you want to highlight numbers >50, then the formula would be just that...
=A1>50
=A1="name"
=A1<>"word"
