Question External workbook - reference with single link?

Is there a way to specify the filename for an external workbook that can be referenced throughout the spreadsheet? In my case it would be better if I could change the single reference instead of having to change it throughout the entire spreadsheet everytime I needed to use data from a different file.

Not sure I understand you problem properly but could you not put external link in say A1 and file name in A2 i.e. A1 value C:\Myfolder\Data\ and A2 value ThisFile.xlsx and use a construction like A1&A2 in your spreadsheet?

In another case, if your external reference is going to be used by the formula's of your current workbook then assigning it in a cell will leads you to use INDIRECT function.

In that case the default worksheet function (i.e. INDIRECT()) will fail when the external workbook is NOT IN OPEN.

So you need to go for some other approach like INDIRECT.EXT of MoreFunc Addin Or PullData Function which you can get by doing google search.
