Link cells from different files with a hoverover type feature

Very inexperienced Excel user here...

I need (Book2 D2 cell) to display the information from (Book1 A1) while keeping the properties of D2 showing. Obviously they need to be linked (while maintining the current information and changes that may occur in the Book2. Also I may add the obvious which is I have NO clue how to do this since I am a new Excel user. Excel for Dummies is an understantement..

this will copy that data that is in A1 in book1 while they are both open together.

Does that work?

Hi and welcome to the forum

I think what nem os saying is...

- go to the cell you want the answer (D2)
- type =
- use the mouse to switch to the other file
- click on the cell there you want to reference ((A1)
- hit enter

So I think I just actully read your post and post title.

Are you saying you have data in D2 in Book1 and you want to hover over it and see what is in A1 in book1?
