    Filter post codes

Hi, I have a list of post codes two letter starts by region. e.g.

    inner london:

    EC
    WC
    SW
    W
    NW
    E
    SE

In addition I have several very long lists of postcodes which I can obviously pull out the first two letters from using the Left function.

However I am wondering what is the best way to filter the column of postcodes into the postcode defined regions such as inner london nicely.

    Any help is greatly appreciated,

    Thanks

Can you upload the data ( dummy in case if it is sensational) as an excel file for better understanding?

    Moderator's Note:
To attach a sample workbook as requested by elayaz.

Make sure there is just enough data to make it clear what is needed. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are demonstrated, mock them up manually if needed. Remember to desensitize the data.

Click on GO ADVANCED and use the paperclip icon to open the upload window.

Willl just the letters be specific enough? Whilst it may be for London, when you get further afield and out into the sticks, letter only postcodes can be HUGE. Would you not be better with everything before the space? - You could use text to columns for that

    Re: Filter post codes

Sure please see attached. I have manually copied two postcodes into cells d2:e2 in the after sheet, but would like to do this using a formula for all the postcodes in the sample sheet. Of which I will have thousands

    Thanks

Very nice move using the 1 instead of a zero at the end of the match function, can I ask why you chose to do that? thanks

    Re: Filter post codes

Because it does a partial match then, the only criteria is that the lookup list must be sorted alphabetically - it means there's no need to try and extract the first letters
