    How to Break external refference link without converting formula to value within sheet.

    Dear all,
    Hello
    I m new to this forum, and this is my first thread, plz help.
    I have a formula in a cell which is refered to other cell within the same sheet and also to other sheet from other file. say
    C1 = A1+B1+data file c1
    Data file is another file in other location.

    I was trying to break a external reference link (from Data File) from Data _ Edit Link, but it is converting all the formula to value.
    How is it possible to break only the external link without damaging the formula within the sheet
    say c1 = A1+B1+26 (value from data file c1)

    do you want to break the link and change it to anaother location?

    You can do this from Data - Connections.

    Or do you want to convert the linked file to numbers and keep the formula for the active workbook references live....?

    Yes you have to put a fixed value instead of the external link in your formula as you said:
    C1: =A1+B1+26

    Is it necessary for C1 to contain the link? One way I might do this is to put the linked value into its own cell (for example, E1). E1=data file C1. C1 in this spreadsheet then becomes =a1+b1+e1. When I am ready to break links, the break links command will break the link in E1 and convert to a value, while C1 retains the formula.
