find closest cell on left & right

I have a worksheet which contains cells with empty spaces, "s" or "e"
I want to create a gantt chart by saying flag all cells with an "s" to their closest left and an "e" to their closest right.

Does anyone know how to do this?

    Example of my worksheet
    ColA ColB Colc ColD ColE
    ---- ----- ----- ---- ----
    S ........ E
    S ..........................E
    E ........ S........ E
    S.............. E.......... S

NB- the ".." are empty spaces

So I want to colour/flag up the empty cells with an S on the closest left cell with text and E on the closest right cell with text
