Excel Data connection to Access database restricts exclusive access to database

My excel spreadsheet populates a table based on a query in an access database. I've setup the connection and everything seems to be working fine with the exception that whenver the excel workbook is open, access behaves as if it is also open. I am prevented from making key changes in Access as if someone else was in the database at the same time. I've verified for sure that the issue is related to my excel spreadsheet. When I close the spreadsheet, access returns to it's normal state and I'm able to make changes again. I suspect that excel establishes a link with access to keep the data updated as long as it remains open.

I wonder if it would be possible to modify this link so that excel would query access only once per instance that it is open and then terminate the connection. When I look under Data on the excel ribbon and then click connections I'm able to find what appears to be settings for my connection that may do what I'm trying to accomplish but I'm not sure how / what to modify. This is what it looks like currently:

This link may help, although I haven't tried it.

hmmm, I made the recommended changes:

But I'm still being locked out of the access database every time I access the excel form.
