Select multiple items in a cell from a list

Hi,

I am new to MS Excel and need to be able to select multiple items in a cell from a list. I tried to use data validation but it allows me to choose only a single item from a list. Could you suggest an easy step-by-step way to select from a list multiple items in a cell?

If there’s no easy way to do so (my computer skills are quite limited), could you please help with the attached excel sheet? I’d like to have a drop-down menu on column C that will enable me to choose multiple items in each cell of that column among the set of items that are in column B. Likewise (although less important), I’d like I’d like to have a drop-down menu on column E that will enable me to choose multiple items in each cell of that column among the set of items that are in column D.

Thank you very much,

Generally speaking, if you want to use the data in cells, you should have 1 data item in each cell. It can be done other ways, but it will be complex and take quite some effort. The best thing you could do here is to describe the overall problem you are trying to solve (rather than come up with your own solution first and ask someone to help you achieve what you think you need). It could be that there is a viable way to get the outcome you want but using a different approach.
My approach to providing help is to help you to help yourself. So my answers won't always solve your problem, but hopefully you can learn enough to solve the problem yourself and be more self sufficient for the experience.

I agree with Mally, and would add that it might help to see what you want, if you include a few sample answers too (as well as how you arrived atthat if it isnt glaringly obvious
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Re: Select multiple items in a cell from a list

Thank you for your response. What I’m trying to do is to fill out a column that has hundreds of rows with items from a preset list. In many of the cells I need to include more than one item from that list, separated by a comma. I tried using a validation list, but this allows me only to choose a single item for each cell, which is not what I need.

And the problem is that I’m new to excel and have never done any programming, so don’t know how to proceed.

I’m copying below the Excel sheet I did with the columns with a validation list, which is as far as I got.

I’d really appreciate any suggestion on how I should proceed.

Thank you very much,

Sorry for the delay

I took a look at your new upload, and it looks exactly the same as the 1st file you uploaded?

Re: Select multiple items in a cell from a list

Thanks for your response. There was before a difference in the upload with the validation list I did in column C.

But in light of your comment and to make it more clear, I made a new excel sheet where I wrote a couple of examples of what I need the cells to fill in.

To explain the new file I’m attaching:

What I’m trying to do is to fill out column C that will have hundreds of rows with items from a preset list (detailed in column B). In most of the cells in column C I need to include more than one item from column B in the same cell, that list, separated by a comma. Examples of what I need are in cells C2, C3 and C4. These cells I filled in manually, writing each item. What I’m trying is to find a way in which I could just tick the relevant items from the preset list.

I tried to do so using data Validation list, but this allowed me only to choose a single item for each cell, which is not what I need.

And the problem is that I’m new to excel and have never done any programming, so don’t know how to proceed.
I’d really appreciate any suggestion on how I should proceed.

Thank you very much,
