aligning two columns - only first part of data is matching

Hi

I have a column (data 2) of data which I have to align to another column (data 1). Data 1 has several columns. The problem is, that the data 2 is longer than data 1, e.g only the first 4 letters/numbers are matching. Data 2 has to be matched with second column of data 1.

How can I align those?

Data 1	Data 1	Data 2
13-r1002	jp-1	tm-2-ABC
13-r1003	tm-2
		qr-3-FAF
13-r900		jp-1-BAB

I tried, but so far am unable to accomplish this without a helper column.

Assuming Data2 start in E2, put =Left(E2) in Column F and paste it down.

Then,

=INDEX(E2:E500, MATCH(B2, F2:F500, 0)
