How to open .dat file in excel

    Hi People.

I have a .dat extension file which was produced by an accounting software. I need to have this file converted into an excel file.
    Can anyone suggest any option.

I tried to save the file rename it .txt file and open it in excel but does not look good.
I also tried to save the file then open excel and delimit the file but still does not work both the options it gives me funny figures that i cannot understand.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    muheebrahman,

On a blank screen click file/open
    select all files (*.*)
    open up the required document

Depending on the files content Excel may or may not be able to open it!

Re: How to open .dat file in excel

    muheebrahman,

I download a 100mb file daily from a website which contents 46 files, when I unzip, they are all .dat files. I then upzip to a folder, there I have created a ms-dos batch file which contents this one line

    HTML Code:
Double click the batch file and it will rename your files from .dat to .txt.
Open excel and selcet a file but select text files, select the file and the delimited window should open. Decide how the text is separated aeither space, comma or vertical line and follow the steps under option delimited.

    Your file should be readable.
