Keeping up with different revisions?

Hey Guys!

As my projects progress, I usually end up with several workbook/worksheet versions (trying something to see if it works & save it, try a different layout & save it, etc). If I step away from it for a week or so & come back, sometimes it's difficult to remember what's what. Does anyone have tips or a good personal system for staying organized?

If/when I'm being good, I save each version with a version number, V001, V002, etc. And I have a separate module which I document the key changes and the date they were made. But then each key function has comments outlining what it does and there will be comments throughout reminding me what each section does. I use structured coding and, in general, have a control module that calls other modules.
