Rotating lines around a cell when copying or pasting in Excel 97

They are annoying & cumbersome. I know you just push escape to eliminate them. They get in the way & some times promote the creation of needless errors. I read they are a default feature. Is it true I don't have the ability to get rid of this feature that I never use and that has no value for me? All I want to know is:

    Can I can disable it?

    How to do it.

If its not possible & I have to live with it, so be it.

    Thanks!

The "Rotating Lines" around a cell or range of cells indicate that you have initiated a copy of that cell's contents or cell range's contents either by clicking on Copy, by using Ctrl + C or clicking on the cell while working on a formula. The exact meaning of the "Rotating Lines" is dependent upon what you are doing at the time.

Those Rotating Lines are for your information so that you know that you are doing something that concerns that cell or range of cells. Without that, you would not be aware that you have selected a cell or range of cells or know exactly what you have selected if you intentionally selected a range of cells.

There is no way of turning that off and if you could, I don't think that you should.

Thank you for your reply. When you select a cell before beginning a copy or paste, the cell(s) instantly has a thick lined box around it. You then know the cell(s) you're working on.
As you said, I can not disable it -- given that, everything else is just conversation. I understand, for some functions it may be useful. However, for my constant / regular / multiple / very simple
copy or cut and paste actions --- all it really does -- is get in the way -- add an extra click -- and create potential errors. Thanks Microsoft. Appreciate your time and getting me an answer that I always wondered about.

    Have a good one!

How does it create an extra click?

after I copy or cut then paste, the rotating lines remain on the original cells I began the formatting from. I then have to click escape for the rotating lines on the original cells to disappear, otherwise they stay there and keep rotating.

That is normal behaviour and has been for as long as I can remember, which covers many versions.

When you copy for example, the Rotating Lines will remain because you can still paste the contents into other locations until you end the process by hitting Esc. and I think Enter. F2 will also stop the Rotating Lines but that puts you in Edit mode for the active cell.

This eliminates you having to copy then paste, copy then paste. You can copy then paste, paste, paste until you have finished.

It doesnt "get in the way" of anything, and I cant really see what the problem is. Actually it DOES do some good...if you are copy/pasting, as long as that cell is still highlighted, you can keep pasting that. It will disappear the very 1st time you hit the enter key when entering something, no need to press escape

I disagree, its rare that I keep pasting an item.
I would never leave it flashing until I hit enter on the next entry because there are always pauses in my work.
I don't want this this glaring obnoxious attention grabbing rotating cell that I'm done with to keep drawing my attention to it.
Just press escape and be done with it.. I think I'm done with this but I still appreciate you clearing it up for me -- Ta!
