    Sorting without changing the position

    I have data like these:

    5,141.3
    4,603.3
    4,618.2
    3,765.8
    2,271.4
    3,851.3
    2,405.6
    1,901.9
    1,750.4
    1,063.0
    1,039.9
    1,079.5
    1,181.0
    1,805.1
    1,154.1
    746.5
    3,756.7
    2,582.8
    2,133.0
    2,551.4
    954.2

I want to sort it from 954.2 to 5141.3 (bottom become top) WITHOUT changing the position. I don't want to sort it from smallest to newest and instead. Anyone know how to make it?

This problem is solved here under " Reversing the order of a list"

Perhaps it is too complicated for you, but that is no reason to give me a negative reputation as you did ( with the comment " too complicated"). A logical approach would be to give yourself a negative rep

( Oh, and BTW, you are now a select member of my " Ignore list")

    @firdaus.mokhtar89

A negative reputation award for what looks to me like a perfectly helpful link to a solution to your problem?

I think the least you can do is to contact an administrator to have that decision reversed.

    Hi pepe

Based on your experience I’ve also added the OP to my “ignore list”.

By the way my “ignore list” carries a lifetime penalty i.e. my lifetime of course. How about your list?

Re: Sorting without changing the position

    Hej Alf

I have no idea about the penalty, but if it's my lifetime, it won't be that long, being almost 64 (lol). ( which qualifies me for " Grumpy old man" (lolagain) )

    Based on your experience..
As Confucius said :" Experience is a light we carry on our backs, and it only illuminates the road we already traveled" ( or something like that )

Re: Sorting without changing the position

    being almost 64
Hah a youngster! Myself I'll be 71 next year early January. Info like this makes me wonder what the average age is for the forum members. Perhaps we should start a thread in the "Water cooler forum" title "Guess my age"

Since I can't quote Confucius perhaps this would do in stead

When I was young and in my prime
I used to do it all the time
But now I'm old my hair is grey
I only do it twice a day.

Of course I'm only referring to my activities in the Excel Forum!

firdaus.mokhtar89, I note you are a new member. We do not take negative reputation lightly here. A negative rep should be for antisocial behavior, causing more harm than good--not for a solution that you don't happen to like. If a solution is more complicated than what you were hoping for, a simple post to that effect is sufficient. And also remember that if a solution is more complicated than what you expect, maybe your problem is more complicated than you realized.

I suggest you add a column next to your data with the formula

    =ROW()

and copy down. Then copy the entire column and Paste Values back into the same column. Then so a sort on both columns using this new column as key in descending order. This is more steps than the solution that Pepe Le Mokko linked but may be easier to understand.
