When I double click on an Excel file from Windows Explorer, I get an error message

When I try to open an Excel file from Windows Explorer, I get a message that says:
"There was a problem sending a command to the program".

If Excel is running, I can open an Excel file by double clicking on it.

If I right click on the file and go to Open with... and then click on Excel, the file will open.

Any help solving this problem will be greatly appreciated.

I am running Windows 8 with a Windows 7 Desktop using Start 8 to bring up Windows 7 functionality.

    Thank you,
    Ron

This sounds like the file associations for Excel have become corrupted.

In Windows 7, go to the Start Button, Default Programs, Associate a File or Protocol with a Program. Scroll down the column of extensions until you come to the file extensions for Excel files (xlsx, xlsm, etc). If Excel isn't the program associated with the extension click on the button in the upper right to change the program.

Other versions of Windows have a similar way to do this.
