    Question Automatically numbering entries

Hi, In my self built spreadsheet I have a column of 33 cells in which I enter a E1 or E2 etc ref for expenses. Because they are already listed, ie. postage, repairs, rent etc they are not in consecutive order. I want to put an E (letter E) in any of the cells and have a 1 (number1) show up and then wherever the next E is entered then a 2 and so forth so I don't have to keep looking up and down to make sure which number is next and to avoid errors. I can then copy this formula to the other 51 weeks of the year in my spreadsheet. I cannot work out a formula for this, any suggestions please?Portion example.xlsx

    Re: Automatically numbering entries

You can do that either with helper columns or with VBA but not straight in one cell/column.

I can add another column, what do I put in that. I am a pub landlord with a basic knowledge of Excel. I have my own spreadsheet that adds up, does my VAT return etc but I need a step by step guide.

Enter E in column F to get result in Column E.

    Re: Automatically numbering entries

It does except it does not retain original numbers but changes them all to consecutive values at each entry

Thanks , I will take a look at VBA , not something I have used before. Onwards and learning!
    Cheers.
