Excel worksheet suddenly crashing excel

Hi,

I have a 2.5 MB spreadsheet that has worked fine for years.. but now when I open it, it either won't open, or will say "Excel has stopped working"

I haven't changed anything about the spreadsheet.. Does anyone know why this is happening, or know how to fix it?

Does it open at all?
When do you see the 'Excel has stopped working' message and what happens next?
Are you opening it across a network? If so try saving it to a local drive and see whether it works.

Open Excel, not the problem File.

Look under File> Options (near the bottom)

Choose Excel Options> Resources, and then run Microsoft Office Diagnostics.

Most of the time it sorts out most of the problems you may have.

You might want to open Excel in Safe Mode then try and open your file.

/s, /safemode Forces Excel to bypass all files in the Application Data\Microsoft\Xlstart folder,
the default XLStart folder located in the directory where Excel or Office is installed,
and the alternate startup file location specified on the General tab of the Excel Options dialog box.
It also forces Excel to bypass the toolbar file (Excel.xlb or <username>.xlb). You see "Safe Mode" in the
Excel title bar. Use this switch when you want to start Excel in safe mode.

If you can open the file, save it under a new name and try opening the new file.

It sometimes opens and sometimes doesn't. When I try to open it, the excel splash screen appears for a while. I normally then close it, then it will either say "cannot quit excel", in which case it will open after that. Or it will say "excel has stopped working."

Sometimes if I open another spreadsheet in excel and then open the problem spreadsheet, I can open the problem spreadsheet with no issues.

Winon, I can't find Microsoft Office Diagnostics in Excel 2013.

Newdoverman, Safe mode doesn't seem to be helping.

Does this workbook have external links? If it does, those links may not be established before the process times out and hangs Excel.

I believe I've found the problem.

It seems that Excel is not compatible with another program I had running, "splitview"
