created workbook with approx 20 tabs. Many dependent on others. When switching from one tab to another and also moving cell to cell screen refresh is very slow. Turned off auto calc and can find no circular references. Anyone have any suggestions?

If this is a laptop, it probably uses system memory a lot for the graphics display. This is minimized a great deal with laptops that have a "dual" graphics adapter like the ATI AMD Radeon HD 7690M and ATI AMD Radeon(TM) HD 6620G combo that handles a heavy load very well.
If it is a desktop computer with a separate graphics card, perhaps the card doesn't have enough memory.

Thanks for the info on the graphics display. Other workbooks of the same size and construction do not have this refresh issue. Seems to be something specific to this sheet.
Is there a lot of formatting on the worksheet?
yes, a lot of colors
That may be the problem. Save your workbook under a new (temporary) name.
Select a tab and on the Home tab, click Clear, Formats....see if there is better performance. Repeat with more worksheets. If the workbook performance is improved, you know that the formatting is the problem.
Only format data that needs to be formatted. Save the fancy formatting for reports.
