One Excel 2010 user corrupts docs after saving

Hey guys, hoping for some insight on an issue I am facing:

We have one user that is running Excel 2010. When she opens a spreadsheet, works on it, then saves it, it opens with errors the next time anyone tries to use it. It gives an "Unreadable content error message" and asks if you want to repair the file. It seems to only happen if she saves it as .xlsx, saving it as .xls doesn't seem to cause the same problem.

    Exact Error:

"Excel found unreadable content in filename.xls. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes."

She is running Office 2010 Home & Business on Windows 7 Pro x64

I have tried repairing Office 2010, uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2010, making sure it has the latest updates and service packs.

Any insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Hi and welcome to the forum

Which excel version are other people using? 2003 and earlier used .xls extention and file format, 2007 and later used .xlsx extention and file format. It is likely that 2003 will open 2007 files, but may have problems with some of the newer features

Is she changing the file type intentionally? If that is the case, she should be saving the file in the format received which is common business practice. FDibbins is absolutely correct about the versions and extensions.

Most of our users are running Excel 2010 or 2013.

Has her computer been scanned for malware and virus infection?

It has been thoroughly scanned using Symantec Endpoint Protection, Malwarebytes, and Spybot.

Are other Excel files affected the same way by this computer?

Can you substitute another computer for the one that seems to be causing problems?

Re: One Excel 2010 user corrupts docs after saving

Can she save the file to her own computer's hard drive and open it? If she can, this problem might be like the problem with Office writing to removable devices like thumb drives where the data can easily become corrupted. I believe that this was shown to be due to temporary files and the written file not being on the same drive. Take a look in Excel's Options for the location of the cache and see if it differs in any obvious way from that on other computers that don't have trouble.

When the file in question is opened by this woman, is she opening the file by using the file open in Excel or is she finding the file using Windows Explorer and double clicking to open? If she is using Windows Explorer and double clicking the file, make sure that the File Preview is not active on the file. Experimenting, I have managed turn a couple of test files into gibberish after trying a few times, if the Preview Window in Windows Explorer was displaying the file being used. This was on my home network and also using Skydrive. All 3 of my computers did the same thing so it wasn't computer specific.
