Post How can I temporarily hide transactions in a bank statement?

I have downloaded some of my bank statements in excel format but they are just static data - ie, they are just numbers in boxes and the BALANCE column does not react when I take out a transaction.

I have put in a formula for the BALANCE column so it does now take its value from the previous day plus or minus transactions, but now I want to do additional things.

    - How would I, for example, categorise several transactions as "HOLIDAY" http://www.excelforum.com/images/icons/icon6.png and then temporarily make them disappear so that I can see the effect of that on my balance? I can see how to hide/unhide transactions but that doesn't actually seem to have any impact on the balance column.

    - Second query: how do I make my current spreadsheet a template so that when I download the next bunch of bank statements I can just apply all the formulae in this one to it?

Any help much appreciated! Thank you.

Use a Table (Ctrl-T) to hold the transactions. Create a column in the table for the categories. Then you can use the Table's filtering to include/exclude categories.
In the Table Design ribbon, you can add a Total bar at the bottom. It will show the total of only the displayed items (and not show the hidden). It uses SUBTOTAL, and you could use a similar technique if you wanted to have the subtotal shown up to each line.

As for your second query, there is too much unknown from your post to provide a succinct response. I would say, if you design your table correctly, a paste of the data should work.
