What is difference between "update" and "enable content" ?

Sometimes I open my company customer-payments file and Excel pops up a window asking whether I want to UPDATE (or not) ....

other times I open the file and that window doesn't pop up, but up at the top (near the formula bar) there is a yellow box with ENABLE CONTENT.

Why the difference?? And what is the difference between these two??

    Thanks!

As far as I know the Update prompt is for updating links to other workbooks.

The Enable Content prompt is different, it's a security alert which can be prompted by a number of things.

For example, you could be opening a workbook from a non-trusted location, or the workbook could have macros.

Does the Enable Content message say anything else?

Thank you for that info Norie. I will need to jot down the entire sequence next time either/both of them happen. There is a macro that is part of the file, so maybe the enable content is directed towards that part of the file. the most-odd part to me is that it's not consistent ....

I'll post the specifics next time they pop up. Thank you!

Re: What is difference between "update" and "enable content" ?

I was able to see the two different messages in question:

    1) "SECURITY WARNING! Some active content has been disabled. Check for more details." And there is a box with "ENABLE CONTENT."

    2) "This workbook contains links to one or more external sources that could be unsafe. If you trust the links, update them to get the latest data. Otherwise, you can keep working with the data you have." And there are three boxes with "UPDATE" "DON'T UPDATE" "HELP"

The file I am using is linking to customer files on our C:DRIVE, so there is absolutely no concern that any links have security issues. The file also uses a macro to consolidate information.

Each morning I want to update the file to the latest customer data available. When message 2) is presented upon opening the file, it's a no-brainer that I'm getting the latest customer data. But when message 2) pops up instead of message 1) .... I'm not clear that my customer data is the latest.

Is there a way to UPDATE a file after it has been open and worked in? Or do you need to close it and reopen to perform an update?

Thank you for any assistance with this!

Re-read my message. I meant to say

If this file is stored in a specific location you could specify that location as trusted.

That can be done if you goto Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings...

I think you can also make a specific document trusted there too.
