How can I stop the short menu appearing when I press the full stop key?

I am a self taught Office Home and Student 2013 user (reasonable proficiency) but have been frustrated when using this new version (new to me).

Usually, when I press the full stop key during typing or entering values into Excel, a short menu appears. How can I stop this?

It happens most of the time including while I am typing this, although not every time? It is most infuriating when entering values into Excel.

Please help before I give up.

It is not a file, it is what happens whenever I am typing in any of the applications, word, excel, etc.
