where to post and how to build worksheet

    Hi,

Please excuse my first time posting in here as I have no idea what thread to post in and also don't know what to call the things I'm trying to do with excel.
so ill give a brief summary as follows

ive imported some information from a database and ill use that as my starting point to build a worksheet that (using a lot of drop down menu choices i guess ) asks the user certain questions and then builds a list of data from some of the original data in the database.
now it's going to be a little bit more complex than that but once i get pointed in the right direction i can then make my way and just only have to come back with the odd question now and then.

thanks in advance... whoever you are...

it would be useful to see some of the information
Please upload a sample of your workbook to the forum, Make sure you have removed any private information, remember this is a public forum and so available to anyone
Would like to see an example of your data and also a manual mock up of the expected results you want to achieve.

To attach a file to your post,
click "Go advanced" (next to quick post),
scroll down until you see "manage Attachments",
click that and select "add files" (top right corner).
click "select files" find your file, click "open" click "upload" click 'done" bottom right. click "submit reply"

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window.
You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.

Re: where to post and how to build worksheet

so far i don't have a workbook started to ask the questions/do the math/spit out the answer. but i do have a spreadsheet of the database of information that will be used to populate the answer sheet/list with
so there will be a number of questions asked using drop down menus to which you pick an answer from, this will keep refining the database until all the questions have been answered so i guess i should start with making a workbook( if thats what its called) with all the questions and drop down answers in it, then later on worry about working out how to program excel(with a macro vba or other such ) so it refines the database.
would this be the right thing to do?

Re: where to post and how to build worksheet

ok so the help was great thanks, it got me thinking about what i need to do.

as I'm making this spreadsheet for a game i play with my friends the idea of it is based around creating a character used to play as.
i think my workbook will be made up of three main parts (please excuse the simplicity of my example)

the data used in drop down menu's for people to choose from
the character sheet that will display the choices people make
and of course all the technical formulas running in the background that make it all happen

so ill try to post something to show what i mean as soon as i have it ready in a basic form

Re: where to post and how to build worksheet

    Hi,
Sorry i took so long getting this done but here is the first part of the workbook i guess
this is how i want it to look but i don't know how to "do the math" so to speak to make it work correctly.

so sheet one contains the database, and in sheet two you can choose different options as you can see but i don't know how to write in the code so that when the player is creating a character using sheet three (i haven't finished that sheet yet) it only allows choices from the database as per the set up on sheet two.
so basically you pick a career to start then when you have completed that career you can move to another via the career exits. you keep going through careers via the entries and exits as many as you like over the course of the game the only rule is your first career must be a basic not advanced one.
so in sheet two the career list is set and page three uses the refined list so I'm not sure how to tell sheet three what the refined list is. i guess there must need to be a new sheet populated by the refinements in sheet two I'm not sure.

i hope this is clear enough and many thanks in advance.
