    Copy and Paste Issues

    Following are the values
    A1=1
    A2=2
    A3=3
    A4=4
    A5=5
    A6 is =SUM(A1:A5) which equals to 15
    When I copy A6 to B1 instead of giving a value of 15 it gives an invalid cell error
    When I copy A6 to C6 it gives 0
    Is there any way to copy and paste just the value without the formula using CTRL C + CTRL V

    Re: Copy and Paste Issues

    Hi, welcome to the forum.

    If you want to paste just the value, copy the cell then click the little arrow below the big paste button and choose 'Paste Values'.

    Edit: the reason you get an incorrect value when you copy and paste a formula like yours is that you're using relative cell references. When you copy SUM(A1:A5) from A6 to C6, Excel thinks you want to make it SUM(C1:C5) - which is why you get 0 if there's nothing in C1:C5. When you copy it to B1, Excel tries to total the 5 cells above B1, which don't exist, so you get a reference error. You won't get this problem if you Cut and Paste (instead of copying) as Excel then realises you want to move the formula as it is. If you want to duplicate a formula elsewhere, you should consider using absolute cell references like SUM($A$1:$A$5) - the $ sign tells Excel not to change the following number or letter - so $A means 'always use column A' and $1 means 'always use row 1', etc. I hope this helps - you can look up relative and absolute cell references in Excel help for more information.

    Re: Copy and Paste Issues

    use absolute ref to your formula with $ sign
    $ sign before A freezes column and before 1 or 5 freezes row number
    Formula: copy to clipboard

    Re: Copy and Paste Issues

    Here comes the long explanation, but it's rather fast to do.

    Select A6
    Put pointer against upper border of the selected cell - Pointer becomes cross hair

    While keeping the RIGHT mouse button depressed, drag the cell to the desired destination ( it could be the original cell)
    Release the button
    A menu appears ( lots of interesting things in there )

    Select " copy here as values only"

    Done

    ( also goes for a range)
