Lost ability to change spelling and numbers in worksheet.

My worksheets have customer names, addresses, phone numbers, dates, prices etc. To make a correction or change to the data in a cell the selected cell would normally be shown in a larger cell at the top of the document and it is there I can use the cursor and type additional characters etc.or simply correct errors. But that is not appearing and I can find no way to make changes.

The bar at the top (Toolbar?) seems to have no way to do that either, though I've searched. There are buttons there that I never use and would be quite happy to reduce the number of those but I don't know how - I'd be very pleased to get help to do that but for now making the changes I've described are essential to me.
