Question Return text from table if it matches another table

    Hi All,

Sorry if this may be a simple enquiry but i need some help with Excel please! I have attached the file as an example

I have a table/column for example in the first column with a list of countries/cities on Sheet1.
Then on Sheet2 i have a list with a few of those countries/cities on.

I want to be able to have a formula whereby i can lookup the list on sheet2 and populate the cells in a column on sheet1 with that same text (country name or city name) if it corresondingly matches the table/column on sheet1.

In the file attached on sheet1 columns 2 and 3 are examples of what i am looking for.

    I hope someone can help.

    Thanks in advance.

Ankara and America are not on Sheet 2, yet you have them listed in Column B on Sheet 1. Please explain and clarify.

Re: Return text from table if it matches another table

    Hi Alan,

    Thanks for replying.

Sorry i should have mentioned that if i have a country/city listed on sheet2 i want only those listed on there to be matched in column D, and the ones that do not match to be left blank.

Therefore Columns B and C were just examples of how i would want it to look like - e.g. If on Sheet3 i had a list of two places America and Ankara, then column B on sheet1 would be how i would want it to be matched (look like).

I hope that is clearer. Sorry about the confusion!

    Thanks!

Thanks for this! Exactly what i was looking for.

However i did have a question (which is probably stupid but i can't work it out) - I wanted to ask what/how the reference to A:A in the table array part of the formula works? I don't quite understand it.
