Formula takes data from different cell on each Row

Hi, I am quite new to Excel and have a simple problem.

I have a workbook to record participants in a weekly bike ride.

The top Rows contain details of each ride - date, route, distance, etc. Subsequent Rows contain details of the participants.

Against each participant a cell contains the distance travelled, by reading the data in the cell at the top of the column.

For the first participant say, this cell may be A5. If I copy the formula to the next Row, cell A5 becomes A6, and so on down the entire column.

Please tell me how I can direct each row to read A5.

I hope I have described this issue clearly, thanks for any help,

    Roger B

You need to use absolute references.
