how do you shift columns inside a table?

having trouble finding the answer and not much luck playing with it. I select the column, only within the table, cut it, then "insert to the right/left" and it says something about the operation not being allowed(attempting to shift column in table). Thanks!

Re: how do you shift columns inside a table?

In my quick test I do not see any problem. I created a table of data and then cut a column, shift over a copy of columns and insert cut cells. Works fine.

It seems to not work with copy though.

How about showing us a sample workbook where it does not work.

first let me ask you if this is the correct way to shift a column. How exactly do you do it? usually I'm just doing something wrong. Thanks

I don't know if there is a correct way, or is it just the most efficient way.

Seems to me, cut the column and then insert cut cells is the most efficient way.

What is causing you troubles other than what you spoke about above?

Do you have a sample workbook to illustrate what you want or think should be happening?

Sorry, but that vid does not play for me. I even took what seems to be a misplaced "." in the middle of youtube.

Can't you just show an example workbook with some instructions on what you are trying to achieve? A before and after?

    there ya go.

same problem. Although I was able to "paste" it in but as shown in video, when I tried that in the original sheet it caused some unwanted permanent(no going back) changes.

But in this fresh new file I also cannot use the "insert" function which to me seems the straight forward kinda obvious intended method of accomplishing what I'm trying to here.

i'm just trying to move columns within a table, as far "before and after"

well... it took me a bit, but I was able to make the changes to the original file. I was about to "insert to right..." at the end, but nowhere in the middle of the table could I do this. Then deleting the original column, which after pasting "to the right" at the end remained as an empty column, was also quite a challenge lol. I can't keep up with all the steps and at this point I'll just count my blessings. Thanks.

Okay sounds good. Just as an FYI. It's always better to attach an attachment directly to the forum as many people either don't want to visit a file sharing site, or like me, can't even visit a file sharing site while I'm at work.

But anyway, glad you have straightened out what you were trying to achieve.

idk why things always have to get complicated over the simplest seeming tasks. thanks. too many variables. maybe it's time to go to apple, to cover at least OS related issues.
